Texas Road Trips and Vittle Stops

Hoover's Cooking in AustinIt seems that road trips have a special place in my heart. In our busy world there is just something about being in a small space (real small in some cars) with someone you enjoy spending time with. You are sitting closer than you usually do at the dinner table and you also tend to talk about topics that just don’t seem to come up in normal circumstances.

Of course, one of my favorite things about road trips is ferreting out something new to eat.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit with a group of fellow travelers at the Academy for Lifelong Learning that is part of Lone Star College in Kingwood and another group at the North Harris College campus. It was so much fun to visit with people who share my love for expeditions both short and long.  It makes me realize how little I have seen of this state.

The ideas keep rolling in to my email box, so I don’t think my travels will be over soon.

The following advice comes from Ernie and Gloria:

Next time on your way to Georgetown go into Austin, South on IH35 take Manor (Texas Talk MAY-nerd) Road exit and go east on Manor Road. Two great restaurants “HOOVER’S COOKING,” 2002 Manor Road, 512.479.5006. Good old fashion cooking, Meat Loaf, Pork Chops etc. This is a Real Diner with food made from Scratch not Sysco. Down the street is EASTSIDE CAFE, 2113 Manor Road, 512.476.5858. Herbs and Vegetables are straight from their garden out back of the restaurant. Again food made from Scratch.

You don’t have to tell me twice, I am already looking for an excuse to head towards Georgetown. December brings the musical “The Christmas Carol” to the Palace Theater on Georgetown’s town square. Sounds like reason enough to me!

Please share your road trips and fun foodie places in the comments below!

Happy driving,
