Road Trip for Early October, Fair on the Square

Huntsville Texas Fair On The SquareGrab your sunglasses and your favorite tunes! It is time to climb in the car and head to one of my favorite cities, Huntsville, Texas. This quick venture is an easy day trip that requires no advance planning.

Huntsville is a really short drive from most Houston area locations and this weekend is a great time to head that way as the quaint and historic town square will host their 37th annual Fair on the Square on Saturday, October 1st.  Over 300 vendors set up shop to sell arts, crafts, collectibles and food during this festival. It is a great place to start your early Christmas shopping or search out antiques. Personally, I go for the food!

From funnel cakes to kettlekorn and barbecue and fried pickles there are treats that will appeal to everyone. If you want a more official meal you just can’t beat Cafe Texan for down home cooking and the sweet service and deserts that you can only get at a true Texas diner.

There are lots of economical activities for adults and children alike. Starting at 9am there are live performances and activities like a moonwalk, bungee run, petting zoo and crafts tent.

Are you a little too old for a petting zoo? Me too! You might want to search out the beer garden with lots of shade and live Texas Country music.

When the crowd gets too thick and you want to find a quiet spot  . .  . there is a peaceful and fascinating small park in Huntsville. It is located just in front of the Sam Houston Museum at the corner of 19th St. and Avenue N. The museum and historic homes are fun to tour, but the park is a very special place. I can sit by the banks of its pond for hours and watch the abundance of turtles play in the sun.

Have fun in Huntsville this weekend and please post your photos and experiences!

Happy Driving,

Lynn Beckwith, That Car Lady
